Commercial auto insurance for California contractors

Commercial auto insurance addresses accidents involving vehicles used by your business. Liability protects against covered claims from others, while optional physical damage coverage protects the vehicles themselves.

A work truck needs the right description

A pickup used for estimates, a van carrying employees and a dump truck hauling material are different insurance risks. Tell us who owns each vehicle, who drives it, what it carries and how far it normally travels. The place where it is parked overnight is its garaging location.

A personal auto policy can restrict business use or certain vehicle types. Explain the actual use before relying on it. The business name, vehicle ownership and policy need to fit together.

Liability and physical damage pay for different things

Auto liability can pay covered injury and property damage claims against an insured driver or business. Physical damage coverage concerns the insured vehicle. Collision generally addresses damage from a collision or overturn. Comprehensive generally addresses specified other causes, such as theft or hail.

A deductible is the amount you contribute to a covered physical damage loss. A lender or leasing company may require this coverage even when you would otherwise choose liability alone.

Employee cars and rented trucks

Hired auto liability concerns certain vehicles the business rents, hires or leases. Non-owned auto liability concerns certain vehicles used for business that the business does not own, such as an employee’s personal car used on an errand. These terms describe the business’s liability protection and do not automatically insure damage to the vehicle itself.

Tell us about rental trucks, borrowed vehicles and employee errands. We can check which autos the policy covers, whether rented-vehicle damage needs separate protection and how the arrangement fits the vehicle owner’s insurance.

Trailers, tools and larger contract limits

A trailer may need to be listed for the coverage you want. Send its use, value and ownership. The tools inside a van or trailer usually need their own tools and equipment review; insuring the vehicle does not automatically insure its contents.

If a customer requires a higher liability limit, an umbrella or excess policy may provide an additional layer above scheduled auto liability. Its terms must fit the auto policy. Send the contract instead of assuming the higher layer covers every vehicle.

Information that makes the quote accurate

Start with each vehicle’s year, make, model and vehicle identification number, or VIN, plus driver details, normal travel area and overnight location. Include lender or lease requirements and any recent accidents.

Tell us before adding a vehicle, changing its use or assigning a new regular driver. Automatic coverage for a newly acquired vehicle, where provided, has conditions and reporting deadlines.

Common questions

Some auto policies provide certain liability treatment for trailers, but physical damage and other terms can require listing them. Share the trailer’s type, value and use so we can check the actual coverage instead of assuming the towing vehicle’s insurance is enough.
